Five states renew on 30 June. That week is the busiest of your compliance year
Pennsylvania, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and Minnesota all turn over at the end of June. If you sell in more than two of them, one week carries most of your annual paperwork.
The cluster
Five of the seventeen states in our library renew or close their year at the end of June: Pennsylvania (licence, 30 June), Georgia (licence year July to June), Virginia (licence and registration, July to June), North Carolina (registration, 30 June) and Minnesota (report year ends 30 June).
Why clusters are dangerous
Spread across the year, five renewals are five small tasks. Landing in the same week, they become one big one — and the one that slips is whichever state you know least well. Every compliance failure we have read about starts the same way: not ignorance of the rule, but a collision of dates.
The other two clusters
31 December: New York's biennial licence expires in even years, and Illinois and Michigan both turn over. 1 July: Washington's biennial cycle starts and California's biennial licences sit nearby. Between those three dates you have most of the annual load.
What to do about it
Work backwards. A renewal you start in the first week of June is administration. The same renewal started on 28 June is an emergency, and June is also when Minnesota's report year closes and the numbers you need are still being counted.
Update, 8 September 2026
We called this the busiest week of the compliance year when the library held seventeen states. It now holds twenty-nine, and that is no longer true: the last two days of January are worse, with nine states wanting something and South Dakota wanting two separate filings a day apart. The correction is in January, not June, is the month that breaks the calendar. Everything above about June still stands; it just is not the peak.
